November 3, 2020 Election Information

The next General Municipal Election in Orinda will be on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.. At that election there will be two Orinda City Council seats eligible for election.

Nomination Period

This is the period when individuals officially receive, circulate and file nomination papers for candidacy.

The nomination period for candidates opens at 8:00 a.m. on July 13, 2020 and closes at 5:00 p.m. on August 7, 2020. If an incumbent fails to submit nomination papers by this deadline, non-incumbent candidates will have until 5:00 p.m. on August 12, 2020 to file nomination papers.  For detailed information about running for office please see Candidates Guide.

Candidates are encouraged to contact City Clerk Sheri Smith at ssmith@cityoforinda.org or 925-253-4221 to schedule an appointment to take out and/or file nomination papers.

Candidate Eligibility

Any person who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, a resident and registered voter of the City in which they are seeking office, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the State of California from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed to a City Office.

Ballot Measure Information

Measures qualify for the ballot in a variety of ways .  A measure can be placed on the ballot by the legislative body (i.e. City Council) or by qualified citizen initiative petitions. 

The legislative body (i.e. City Council), any individual voter who is eligible to vote on the measure, a bona fide association of citizens, or any combination of these voters and associations may file a written Argument In Favor or Against any measure placed on the ballot by the governing body or initiative.
