The City of Orinda conducts municipal elections on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even numbered years. Council members serve four (4) year staggered terms. There is no limit on the number of terms a council member may serve.
The next General Municipal Election is November 6, 2018.
The City Clerk is the local elections administrator and coordinates with Contra Costa County in the conduct of Municipal Elections. The November 6, 2018 General Municipal Election will fill three seats on the City Council for four year terms. Persons interested in running for the office of City Council Member for the City of Orinda should contact the City Clerk’s Office at (925) 253-4221. Successful candidates will be installed in the month of December 2018.
Any person who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, a resident and registered voter of the City in which they are seeking office, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the State of California from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed to a City Office.
This is the period when individuals officially receive, circulate and file nomination papers for candidacy.
The nomination period for candidates opens at 8:00 a.m. on July 16, 2018 and closes at 5:00 p.m. on August 10, 2018. If an incumbent fails to submit nomination papers by this deadline, non-incumbent candidates will have until 4:00 p.m. on August 15, 2018 to file nomination papers.
Candidates are encouraged to contact the City Clerk to schedule an appointment to take out and/or file nomination papers.

Voters qualify for registration by being a U.S. citizen, aged 18 years or older, a resident of Orinda, and neither in prison nor on parole for a felony conviction. Re-registration is required if you have moved since you last registered, changed your name, or changed your political party affiliation.
The registration deadline is 15 days before an election. For the November 6, 2018 General Election the deadline to register to vote is October 22, 2018.
